Laura Iwan, P.Eng.
When Laura was in university, she converted a pick-up truck from gas to electric for the town’s police department, and built and raced solar cars for fun. For her master’s project, she developed a neural-network based controller for a fuel cell vehicle’s on-board methanol fuel processor. Then she got a “real” job.
As a systems engineer at Ballard Power Systems, Laura has designed, commissioned, tested, and resolved failures in fuel cell systems for stationary power plants, submarine generators, transit buses, and passenger cars. In 2008, she joined the Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation (AFCC). At AFCC, Laura optimized and validated operating strategies, investigated and mitigated failures, and performed detailed test data analysis.
Now, Laura is excited to be part of OverDrive’s lean, fast-paced, and talented project team where she gets to collaborate with her co-workers and customers to overcome technical challenges. Her role includes wrangling fuel cell stack requirements, developing the stack concept of operation, and working with customers to refine operating algorithms of their existing fuel cell systems.
When not working to spread the use of environmentally friendly vehicles throughout the world, Laura can be found playing jazz or classical trumpet, hiking or cross-country skiing, baking healthy muffins, and spending time with her husband and sons.
