Paul Towgood

Engineering Operations

More than 20 years ago, Paul helped develop the process for the world’s first PEM fuel cell military submarine power plant, and went on to design, test and commission some of the largest PEM fuel cell stacks in existence.

Two decades later, Paul brings his years of clean technology experience to OverDrive. He first honed his expertise at Ballard Power Systems and has since held management positions in operations and engineering at cleantech companies QuestAir Technologies, NxtGen Emission Controls, Inventys Thermal Technologies, and Terrella Energy Systems. He has also executed consulting contracts in biomass gasification, fuel cell technologies, and hydrogen infrastructure.

As OverDrive’s director of engineering operations, Paul is charged with setting up and operating the company’s state-of-the-art prototype lab where the team will design and develop fuel cell stacks for their clients. Paul is used to moving quickly and efficiently – the mechanical engineer spends his time outside the lab hiking, biking, climbing, skiing, and swimming with his wife and daughter, as well as training for gran fondos and sailing. He also takes time to follow the financial markets (he is a graduate of the Chartered Financial Analyst Program) and to visit the family farm in B.C.’s interior.

Paul is excited to work with a small team of smart people who will be driving the electrification of transportation. He says nothing beats the feeling of the first successful operation of a new design that helps make the world a better place.

Ask him about: what it’s like to breathe at 20,000 ft.
